Designed in collaboration with Fáilte Ireland, the Republic of Ireland's National Tourism Development Authority, and part of a €2.3 million capital investment allocated for the elevation of the region, Etain designed and developed the mobile-first www.irelandsancienteast.com to promote events and attractions of international appeal in Ireland’s Ancient East region.
Ireland's Ancient East Kentico website
From the initial UX workshops to the development of the brand toolkit and the website build itself, it has been a fantastic journey for all involved. Working closely with the Fáilte Ireland team, we’re helping Ireland’s Ancient East gain significant traction and enjoy the attention it deserves.

Martin Goss, Etain Ltd
Ireland's Ancient East responsive site
In direct contrast to Fáilte Ireland’s pre-existing Wild Atlantic Way site, hugely influenced by the rugged, active and adventurous nature of the landscape, Irelandsancienteast.com is based on Ireland’s unequalled tradition of storytelling, outstanding folk heritage and rich, historical wonders.

Our Approach

Through a series of intensive UX workshops and brand refinement exercises, Etain identified Fáilte Ireland’s creative ethos and physically implemented their direction via an interchangeable, modular layout and a series of rich-media widgets, as well as an interactive map powered by JavaScript and the Mapbox API.

Our Solution

Among the outcomes from the UX workshops was the suggested and adopted inclusion of virtual tours or ‘360° tours’ as an immersive experience for users to sample what the sites and locations on offer had to offer. Through high resolution visualisations and user guided controls visitors to the site are able to delve into ‘5,000 years of storytelling’ using 21st century technology.

Ireland's Ancient East Etain ltd

Using Mapbox our developers were able to create an interactive map by uploading custom data utilising one of their robust tilesets. Featuring the ability to build and publish custom interactions, the Ireland’s Ancient East map plays host to geocoding allowing users to search starting points and final destinations, as well as locating places of interest on the map.

www.irelandsancienteast.com is a state of the art Kentico 9 deployment fully optimised for tablets and smartphones with consideration for accessibility and future expansion built in. Featuring ‘living covers’ in the hero location of each page, as well as reactive elements that move and activate as your scroll, the site is brought to life with the stories that influenced it. Users can immerse themselves in the ancient past by delving into the cutting edge virtual tours and choosing from a range of themed itineraries, each one dynamically programmed into the interactive map.
