Many companies large and small are still afraid to engage in social media. Even when presented with examples of what their competitors are doing, it’s seen by some as a pointless exercise, fraught with peril.

Compliance and industry regulations aside, whatever your sector or speciality there is a social media channel for you…and a way of communicating your brand without committing a faux-pas.

We’re not going to tell you to join Facebook because your business-nemesis has, nor are we going to recommend you tweet ad nauseam about how wonderful your customers are. There are too many good and bad strategies out there to start naming them here. What we are going to do is tell you about 3 positive ‘social media side-effects’.

Company Profiles Rank in Search Engines

Did you know that the more active, quality social media feeds you nurture, the more exposure you’ll receive in search engine results? And we’re not talking about social links here, we’ll get to that later.

Go ahead and type ‘Etain Ltd’ into Google and you’ll see our Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profiles are right there on the first page of results.

But people aren’t going to type in your business name, right? Wrong. We do it all the time when we’re looking for a telephone number (Thank you Google My Business) don’t we? Or when we’re looking up a website, even when it’s one we know and have visited before!

So what’s the benefit? Well for one, if you make it easy for clients, past and future to find your social feeds they are more likely to ‘follow’ you and thus more likely to recall your services when they are next in need of the kind you provide.

And secondly, it inspires confidence. An organisation with an active feed is one with something to say. And in this case, what you’re saying is that your company is alive and kicking and ready to do business.

Social Media Channels Are Really Effective Search Engines

Ever visited YouTube and typed in a few keywords to see if there is a relevant tutorial or event replay? Of course you have. That’s what made YouTube the second largest search engine in the world. Boasting eye-watering stats, this social media channel is just about as mainstream as it gets.

Cultivate a presence on this media giant and you could tap into over a billion users every month! Alternatively, if making videos isn’t your thing you could still take advantage of hundreds-of-millions of video playback, by serving you marketing collateral through the Google ad platform.

Then there’s Twitter and Instagram and the hashtag revolution. If you’re active on either of these channels and you use hashtags in your posts, there’s every chance your content will be discovered by someone searching that topic. Let’s say you are an online fashion retailer providing commentary on the latest celebrity trends, choose your #hashtag right and you could cache in on a viral audience who are following a particular story or personality. They see from your profile that you sell designer clothes and voila! You have successfully distracted them during their celeb-fix and directed them to your site and your products.

This tactic isn’t reserved for fashion and beauty, it’s big business in big business too. Next time you’re on Twitter search for #throwbackthursday, #fillupandgo or #smartersoftware and you’ll see big names from CNN to Shell UK harnessing the power of the hashtag.

Social Links Could Be Better Than You Think

Did you know that social links may (or may not) boost exposure in search engine results?

Ok so this is a bit of a grey area, and with so much conflicting information regarding social back links we don’t blame you for being unsure.

That said, Matt Cutt, Head of Google’s Web Spam team, says, “Facebook and Twitter pages are treated like any other pages in our web index, and so if something occurs on Twitter or occurs on Facebook and we’re able to crawl it then we can return that in our search results.”

So your website might not experience a ‘boost’ in the search result rankings but your branded Twitter or Facebook post might! And that’s as good a reason as any to get on board. If a major, official Google representative is saying that the viral blog article you distributed on Twitter has been noticed and crawled and they are going to take it into consideration when configuring ranking positions, then it’s pretty safe to assume that quality social links may boost your company’s presence in the search ranking.

The key word here is ‘quality’. Post loads of spam or poorly written content and your posts may not appear favourably in the results.

We’re guessing that if you’re reading this you’re serious about learning the do’s and don’ts, and would never dream of spamming. So you could be just a few quality back links away from a better search engine presence. Either way, it’s good practice to write good content and distribute it to your followers.
