Social media is everywhere. It is rare to meet someone today who doesn’t have a profile on at least one social media platform. It is often underestimated as merely a simple and easy way to communicate with family and friends. However, it is so much more than that.

1. Know your Platform!

Each social media platform such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn has its own unique culture. To become a successful business on social media you must know your platform. Different platforms also use different image dimensions, find out more here. Here are some examples of ways to approach different platforms;

Worldwide, there are over 1.65 billion monthly active Facebook users. It is a place where people go to relax and chat to friends after a long day at work. It is not a place to talk serious business. Therefore, when you create your business page, try and maintain a light and friendly tone. Visual aspect is key so rather than having long paragraphs of text, keep it interesting by posting industry related images, videos and articles. Keep it fun!

In order to gain twitter followers, follow tweeters in your industry related field and fingers crossed you will get some back in return. Tweet anything new about your business but also add some personality to your account by including fun tweets here and there. Remember, you can always retweet other people’s tweets. To make yourself more well known, how about retweeting industries in your business field.

If the fun, quirky atmosphere doesn’t suit you, LinkedIn definitely will! With a more professional tone, it is a place to share content and ideas with similar industries and people. There is also a section where customers or clients can give you a business recommendation on your profile. You should encourage this as it will allow your business to appear more credible and reliable for new customers. The Questions section will establish trust among potential clients which will give your business authority.

The idea of uploading a video online for everyone to see is just too daunting for so many businesses. But don’t let it be. You don’t need to be the new Alfred Hitchcock to upload a video. It can be plain and simple, such as a video giving instructions on ‘how to’ do something. This will make your brand known, so don’t be too scared of video before you try it.

2. Make yourself known

By increasing your brand awareness and engaging with customers frequently, your business will automatically become better known. More engagement with customers will cause more loyalty and higher brand authority. It is especially beneficial if you can get major influencers to talk about your brand by connecting with them on, for example LinkedIn.

3. Improve Customer Service

Every business is based on customer service satisfaction. What does your customer need and want from you? What method of social media does your customer prefer? Social media allows you respond to customer queries quickly and easily. If a customer receives a quick response from a business, they are more likely to be impressed and recommend it to others. Therefore, businesses without social media accounts are at a disadvantage.

4. Remember, It’s more about quality than quantity

Despite social media being the fastest and easiest way to communicate with clients, be careful about what you say. It is not necessary to have a company profile on every form of social media. You could receive a lot of negative response for one badly worded tweet or even by retweeting something inappropriate or offensive. One click of a button can make a difference. If you post a lot of spam, your posts may not appear favourably in the results.
But don’t let that put you off. As the figures prove, social media can have so many positive effects on your business, if you use it right!

5. What are you waiting for? Get stuck in!

After reading this, I hope you are thinking, ‘Why would I not have a social media account?’ Technology is evolving and so must you. Using social media will create a better search engine presence for your business. It requires very little effort and you don’t even have to move from your seat to create an account. It’s so easy!
